Music Scholarship

Welcome to the Music Scholarship Application! We look forward to your audition and your interest in Nelson University.

Recipient must:
  • Apply to Nelson University
  • Declare Music as the major and be actively involved in the music program.
  • All scholarships are disbursed over at least two semesters. Scholarships will be forfeited if the student is placed on any type of probation (academic, disciplinary, chapel, etc.)

The scholarship is available through audition only. The applicant should make an appointment to come on campus for the audition, or may submit a YouTube link for the audition:

Nelson Music Scholarship Application

Audition Information

The complete audition needs to include the following:

Brass Auditions

  • Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Worship Leadership

    • Chromatic scale: minimum of 2 octaves
    • Two contrasting pieces
    • Optional: a performance with a worship team

Guitar Auditions

  • (Electric or Acoustic Guitar)
    Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Worship Leadership

    • Major, minor and pentatonic scales (at least 2 out of the 3 in two different positions on the neck)
    • Two contrasting pieces (with both chordal accompaniments and linear melodies)
    • Optional: a performance with a worship team

  • (Bass Guitar)
    Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Worship Leadership

    • Major, minor and pentatonic scales (at least 2 out of the 3 in two different positions on the neck)
    • Two contrasting pieces
    • One jazz standard (medium swing) with walking bass and melody (improv optional)
    • Optional: a performance with a worship team

Percussion Auditions

  • Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Worship Leadership

    • Major scales: minimum of 2 octaves (keyboard)
    • Snare solo and 40 Rudiments
    • Drum Set – three contrasting styles: Latin, Funk, Rock, Blues, Swing, Ballad, etc.
    • Optional: a performance with a worship team

Piano Auditions

  • Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Worship Leadership

    • Scales and Arpeggios: minimum of 2 octaves
    • Two contrasting pieces
    • Optional: a performance with a worship team

String Auditions

  • Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Worship Leadership

    • Scales: minimum of 2 octaves
    • Two contrasting pieces
    • Optional: a performance with a worship team

Vocal Auditions

  • Vocal Performance and Music Education

    • One aria/art song (this is a classical selection that can be in any language – performed from memory)
    • Optional: a musical theater song performed from memory

  • Worship Leadership

    • One worship song performed from memory (accompanied)
    • Optional: a video of a worship song being led by applicant with a worship team

Woodwind Auditions

  • Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Worship Leadership

    • Chromatic full range of the instrument
    • Two contrasting pieces
    • Optional: a performance with a worship team
