Traditions at Nelson University

At Nelson University, traditions are more than celebrations—they are expressions of our commitment to faith, fellowship, and fun. These cherished customs bring together students, alumni, faculty and staff, creating moments that reflect our shared values and mission. These cherished traditions are part of what makes Nelson University feel like “home” for so many.

The Lion of Judah: A Symbol of Faith and Strength

The Origin of Judah the Lion

In 1963, Nelson University embraced the “Lion of Judah” as its mascot, inspired by Vice President George Brazell’s acquisition of a four-month-old lion cub named Judah. Drawing from biblical symbolism, Judah represents strength, courage, and a Spirit-led pursuit of God’s calling.

What Judah Represents Today

Judah remains a powerful symbol of Nelson University’s identity. More than a mascot, Judah embodies the Spirit-led mission of the university, encouraging students to lead lives of faith and purpose.

The Harvesters: Sharing the Gospel Through Music

The Beginnings of the Harvesters

Decades ago, the Harvesters were formed as Nelson University’s premier traveling choral group. With their harmonious blend of voices, they introduced churches across the nation to Nelson University’s mission and ministry.

A Legacy of Worship

As the only traveling choral group for many years, the Harvesters became a cornerstone of Nelson University’s outreach efforts. Their Spirit-led worship left a lasting impression on congregations and strengthened connections with the community of faith.

Honoring Their Legacy

The Harvesters were sunsetted in 2022 after decades of ministry, a decision shaped by challenges brought on by COVID-19. Although their time as a group has come to a close, their legacy continues to inspire Nelson’s commitment to worship and service.

Battle of the Dorms

A Day of Community and Fellowship

Each year, students come together for Battle of the Dorms, a spirited day filled with friendly competition, fellowship, and fun. Events include sand volleyball, relay races, and opportunities to showcase dorm pride, all grounded in a sense of unity and encouragement.

The Prized “Battle Vac” Trophy

The highlight of the event is the awarding of the “Battle Vac” to the winning dorm, a symbol of camaraderie and teamwork.

Collinstock: Worship and Creativity Under the Stars

A Night to Celebrate Community

Held annually on the lawn of Collins Hall, Collinstock is a gathering of students under the Texas stars for music, comedy, and fellowship. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with makeshift stages, cozy blankets, and snacks setting the stage for an unforgettable evening.

Showcasing Spirit-Led Talent

Collinstock serves as a platform for students to share their God-given talents, fostering creativity and a deep sense of connection within the university’s Spirit-led community.

Homecoming: A Celebration of Faith and Fellowship

Embracing the Lion for Life Spirit

Homecoming is a week of vibrant activities that bring together students, alumni, and faculty. From dorm decorating to tailgating and cheering for the home team, the event reflects a shared passion for community and faith.

Honoring Alumni and Traditions

Homecoming also includes alumni awards and gatherings that celebrate the enduring bond of fellowship at Nelson University.

Christmas at SAGU

A Season of Light and Joy

As the holiday season approaches, Nelson University transforms into a festive campus adorned with beautiful lights. The “lighting of the lawn” is a cherished tradition that unites the community in a celebration of Christ’s birth.

Sharing the Spirit of Christmas

Activities include pictures with Santa, hot chocolate, ornament decorating, and Christmas music. These moments of joy and fellowship highlight the true meaning of the season.
